Deterring Thieves

Unfortunately, not everyone that will be in the woods this fall are upstanding citizens and ethical hunters. Each fall numerous ground blinds and tree stands are stolen. To help prevent your gear from being stolen try hanging a small sign on your ground blind or tree stand before you leave. It's amazing what a small sign that says "Smile, you are on hidden camera" will do. Most people know that deer trail cameras are widely used and the potential thief may think twice about stealing your gear if they think there is a chance of being caught on camera.

How very true, I had several tree stands stolen on public land. Each of these stands was padlocked to the tree with a chain and the tree steps or climbing sticks have been removed. This did not deter the thieves who seemed to be equipped with ladders and bolt cutters. I guess some folks are in the woods to hunt for others property.

With all due respect, knowing some of the types of folks who'll steal a treestand... if they see such a sign, they're likely to start looking for your camera too.

I like this idea. They probably will look for the camera, but it might be enough to deter them. Worth a try.

Remember, the sign and the thought of being caught may be enough to make the potential thieves leave without taking your stuff. Putting an actual camera out there is optional. If you do place a camera it had better be well hidden and one that used infared flash.

I'd also recommend being responsible with your gear during the offseason (or even inseason if you're done hunting). Don't leave stands up year round (it's not good for the trees).
