Craig, before you sell your switchback to fund a traditional bow, think about making your own. I have a friend who did it over a weekend and it cost him less than $30. here's an excellent link:

You can start with a 6 or 8 foot oak plank for less than $8.

The Switchback does allow for draw length adjustments. I'm not sure about the price, I'm open to offers. On Ebay they have been selling between $550 and $650.

Thanks. I just came across several websites that talk about building your own bow. It looks interesting. I'll also check out the link you gave. I like the idea of saving money.

Craig,

Good luck on the jump. I've been stubbornly clinging to traditional archery since I started, four years ago. I've yet to tag a big game animal...missed several though... (amazing, since I seem to have no trouble hitting squirrels and rabbits), but for the most part, the frustration has been equalled by my enjoyment of the challenge.

However, after my recent elk hunt (last week), I've started having second thoughts about my hard-headed stance. That hunt cost a pretty good bit of cash, more than my first two cars, and it might have made better sense for me to make such an attempt with modern tackle rather than the recurve. The one good shot I did have would have been a "chip shot" with a compound. As it was, the inability to draw and hold for an extended period and the length of the bow combined to cost me a clean shot.

I love shooting trad, and when I do score with this bow it'll be a trophy no matter how big or small. But there's a lot to be said for leveraging modern technology too... something that I'm only now beginning to accept.

Man that would be hard to loose out on a chance at an elk. I just received a test drive bow from Black Widow. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow. I hope that I can make this switch to traditional archery. I know there are drawbacks but that is one of the reasons I wanted to do it. Shooting a compound has almost become as easy as shooting my rifle. I'll probably have a different view after I shoot a recurve for a while though.
