Use Bigger Bait

As the summer progresses the small bait fish of the early fishing season are now mostly grown up. Game fish have been eating these guys all along and are now used to eating the larger bait fish. If you continue using small bait you will be decreasing your chances of catching fish. Remember to feed them what they want.

This is a fact that I learned years ago the hard way. Fish know what is available to them and what time and what it looks like. Using something different is a sure way to let them know it’s not real. By the way you have been awarded with The Power of Schmooze Award. For details please visit my blog.

Plus bigger fish do not want to expend a lot of energy chasing small food items. Bigger baits mean more for nourishment for them with less energy expended.

great tip. I hadn't really ever thought about it, but baitfish have cycles, too and your target fish would be tuned into those cycles. thanks

I actually use a SMALLER gold spoon when shore casting for trout in the spring because the smaller spoons get more action during a slow return than larger spoons. I actually catch a lot more trout this way, but not necessarily bigger trout. I have caught a lot of big trout though. I encourage people to use the smallest spoon they can find but maybe ad a little wait to the line to allow for further more accurate casts.
